Tips for a Successful Tutoring Lesson 📚

Updated: Nov 2, 2023

As a tutor, preparation is vital. Have notes, relevant materials, and a well-structured plan for the 55-minute session based on the student's needs, as requested in the lesson notes.

Here are some tips for a successful tutoring lesson:

1) Knowing the exam board of the requested syllabus 📚

It is imperative that the material you prepare is developed specifically for the student's exam board. Every exam board is unique in its own way; therefore, if you prepare for the wrong exam board, this could greatly confuse the student and may affect your rating as a tutor.

2) Incorporate Variety 🧩

The most important factor of tutoring is keeping students engaged throughout the whole session. To keep students engaged, vary tasks in difficulty, use various teaching methods, and incorporate screen sharing for interactive whiteboard sessions and sharing material.

3) Set Goals 🎯

Establishing mini goals for a session is a good way to maintain focus and motivation for the session. Setting clear outcomes at the start of the lesson will make the student understand exactly what will be accomplished. Also, if you’re dealing with a repeat client, consider setting long term goals.

4) Encourage Discussion 🗣️

Ensure you promote open-ended discussions that go beyond simple yes or no responses. Boost their confidence with constructive feedback, recognising their dedication and accomplishments.

5) Set mini breaks

Allowing short breaks can be good to prevent burnout and maintain focus, especially when dealing with a challenging topic. However, this entirely depends on the type of student.
