Prepare Lesson Structure Beforehand:
Crafting a structured lesson plan before your session is crucial. It acts as a roadmap, ensuring key objectives are covered while allowing adaptability to the student's needs. Preparation enables a focused, coherent flow of information, making the learning experience engaging and tailored. This structure also offers a framework to infuse your unique teaching style, aligning the session to both your and the student's preferences, ensuring a productive and enjoyable learning journey.
1) Start with a nice welcome greeting 🤗
Start the session with a brief greeting, asking them about their day and their personal interests. Building this rapport helps your student feel more comfortable expressing themselves.
2) Starter Activity 🎯
When approaching a repeat session with a student, it is good to use the recall technique as a starter exercise. This is where the student will review previous knowledge learnt in the previous session through a quiz or test. If it's your first session, you can prepare sample questions or a range of difficulty in questions relating to the topic requested.
3) The ‘I Do, We Do, You Do’ Technique 🛠️
When teaching a new concept, the ‘I Do, We Do, You Do’ technique is an excellent technique.
I Do - Where new content is displayed and explained. ‘Eg. In maths, present numerous examples of different equations with varying difficulty with a step by step analysis that doesn't confuse the student.’
We Do - Once the material has been explained, go through examples with the student and work through it together. Ask them questions and let them take the lead in solving, and help when needed.
You Do - Now it is up to the student to independently go through questions by themselves. You still need to monitor their work to ensure they are not going off path. Remember to keep students engaged, don't be afraid to make your lessons more fun at times, as 55 minutes can be a long time for students imputing maximum brain power!
4) Ending The Lesson 📚
At the end of the lesson, have a brief discussion with your student to reflect on what they've learned and identify areas for improvement. Remember to express gratitude for their time and effort, and be sure to include these insights in your lesson report
